About QuickTimeQuickTime, by Apple Computer, is the world's premiere video and audio format. Important Installation Instructions for QuickTime 6 under Windows What's New in QuickTimeThe main features of interest for iScreensaver users are that QuickTime will enable you to use full Flash 5 ActionScripts in your Flash movies, and Quicktime 7 adds full high-definition H.264 compression to screensaver movies. However, with Quicktime 7.1.3, Flash compatibility has been turned off by default, and must be turned back on via Quicktime's System Preferences or Control Panels. See here for details. This step may change with future versions. The free QuickTime software can be obtained here from Apple. Also, advanced users will want to read Apple's What's New in QuickTime and Apple's QuickTime FAQ. Why use QuickTime? In the quest to simplifly the cross-platform authoring experience, iScreensaver uses Apple's QuickTime as the basis of all graphics and audio, because it's the only multi-platform global-standard high-quality image display medium available where the same files work for both older and all current versions of Windows and Macintosh. Once you create your movie file for one platform, you're done! Every MacOS computer comes with QuickTime installed, and many major PC makers (such as Sony and Hewlett-Packard) now pre-install QuickTime during manufacturing.
Including QuickTime on a CD or DVDDuring installation of your screensaver, it will automatically detect whether QuickTime is installed. If not, iScreensaver will automatically direct the user to the QuickTime Download website. If you are distributing a CD-ROM, you can include the QuickTime installer on the CD to avoid the need for the download. For more information from Apple about QuickTime distribution, Click Here. File FormatsAs of this writing, (QuickTime 7) over 200 file formats are supported. Creating a Slide Show Movie using QuickTimeBesides using the new Slide Show features of iScreensaver Designer 3, we have a couple of hints and tips on creating slideshows from QuickTime tools. Creating an Interactive QuickTime MovieThis web page provides a list of resources used to create interactive QuickTime movies. Recommended third-party programs include Apple QuickTime Pro, Adobe GoLive, and Totally Hip's LiveStage Pro, but we suggest previewing all your scripting in iScreensaver Designer since some interactive features may not be available when operating as a screensaver. Installed User BaseKnowing your market is important. Although estimates vary as to the numbers of computers running MacOS versus Windows, generally most estimates give Mac about 10% to 15% of the installed user base. Remember, 'installed user base' is often different than 'market share' (which represents only last years' sales) because historically, MacOS computers have a longer lifecycle than Windows PCs. For more reading, with additional links to installed base estimates, click here. Also, it is important to remember that in many segments of the market (such as Education, Advertising, Graphics Arts, and Higher Education) the MacOS installed base can be 50% or higher. This is why having a cross-platform screensaver can be vital to the success or failure of your project. Copyright ©1995-2011 Xochi Media Inc. All Rights Reserved.
