I'm getting alot of trouble when creating a screensaver using any quicktime file. Flash is working fine. Here's my current error message:

iScreensaver: An error occured.
Internal Error = cStage.NextAsset: movie file won't open : C:\Documents and Settings\caveman\Application Data\iScreensaver\Saver\ISC1-060320-093357\9546185A.mov

I've tried many different codecs, and I still keep getting this problem(although some other video formats are working).

Can you open the movie file in QuickTime player on the PC in question? If not, then there is something wrong with either the movie file, or with the QuickTime install.

Does updating to the latest version of QuickTime help?

Yes, I can open it just fine, and I'm using the latest version of Quicktime.

Try this:

1. Deactivate the screensaver (choose "(None)") from Display Properties setup.
2. Reboot windows.
3. delete the entire folder : C:\Documents and Settings\caveman\Application Data\iScreensaver\

4. Re-build, then re-install your saver.

1. You said in your original message that some video codecs are working. Which ones work and which ones don't work?

2. Can you send us a copy of your installer that doesn't work (either email us a URL to download it, or email the file itself if it's under 10MB)?

Hi Cave,

We looked at the installer you sent us. What I'm seeing is that your movie file is indeed bogus.

This usually happens when you are trying to use a multi-fork movie file that originated on a Mac, and you forgot to make it self-contained.

Is it possible that you
A. Built this iScreensaver file on a Mac
B. Are using a quicktime movie that is not "Self Contained" or "Flattened"?
C. Ignored the warning about using a movie that is not Self Contained/Flattened?

Try opening the original movie file on a Mac, in QuickTime player, and re-saving it choosing the "Make Self Contained" option. Then, select this new file as the movie, rebuild, and try again on a Windows machine.

All files were built on a PC, a mac never came into play, with the exception of testing installers on a mac. I'm gonna try to rerender the video, the reason I want to keep it as a quicktime file is that I'm not having very good luck within my render client(a quite limited one....) when rendering out as anything but .MOV. When I try to convert to anything else from the .MOV files, I'm getting a nasty loss of color/contrast accuracy(in a much nicer conversion client). I'll keep you posted on rerender. Thanks!

Well, if you are building on Windows, I'm rather mystified.

1. In the installer you sent us, the movie file was exactly 1113002 bytes in length. Can you check to see what the file size is on your machine? If it's different, this suggests a filesystem issue:

2. Is it possible that when you built the screensaver installer, you had the movie file open in another program? We've seen cases where that can totally mess it up. Try to make sure that when you build the installer file, you don't have that movie file open in any other program.

3. Are you storing any of these files on a network drive? If so, try copying all graphics & movie files to your C: drive, then create a Brand New project and re-select the items. Then rebuild.

Let us know if either of these ideas help...

One more thing:

Make sure that you aren't editing, moving or renaming files them behind the back of iScreensaver. If you make any change to a movie file, make sure you make the changes while iScreensaver is not open. Then, close the movie editor (to be safe). Then, re-open your project in iScreensaver, and RE-SELECT the movie file. This will give iScreensaver a chance to properly notice that changes have been made.

To be really sure, it sometimes helps to actually change the movie file name each time you modify it (e.g. "MyMovieRevision34.mov") and then check the Build Log (click the disclosure triangle during build) to make sure the filename matches.

Editor note: As per customer's email, the main problem turned out to be that the program they were using to create video files was exporting QuickTime movies that were not flattened.

I've encountered very similar problems as Cave, only I'm on Mac. The screensaver was downloaded from Greenpeace International website. Some suggestions to get it work again would be great.

First, you say "Flash is working fine" -- however, Flash has been disabled as of QuickTime 7.3 : please read this: http://iscreensaver.com/qt713.shtml

The ultimate test of this is to take your plain .MOV file, and see if it opens in QuickTime player on both Mac and Windows machines. If not, then the problem is in the codec. Unfortunately, there are a number of codecs which are not mac/win compatible. However, the majority of them are. We recommend H.264 if you have a large movie and want maximum compression, or MotionJPEG if you want maximum performance & quality. See http://iscreensaver.com/motionjpeg.shtml
