I am working on a screen saver for a client. I want to play this quicktime file in the screensaver but it skips towards the end of the clip. Its a large file 51MB quicktime movie. I have compressed the hell out of it and can't compress any more. Quality issue. I tryed putting the programs memory to 150000, lowering the screen resolution, and its running on a titanium G4 laptop. Is there something I can do? Please help?IP: Logged |

Josh, A few things may help:(1) First, make sure that the movie itself isn't skipping. Can you get a smoooth playback using QuickTime player alone? Often, when you compress a movie, complex scenes can't be handled at the given datarate, which results in visual glitches. Further compression may in fact make this problem worse! (2) Next, 51MB is an awfully big movie file for a screensaver. (3) What version of iScreensaver are you using? Version 1.6.1 (which has not yet be released) includes a "Load Movie Into RAM" option, which tries to load the movie into RAM first before playback. This could possibly help. (4) Another possibility (with a powerbook) is that Processor Cycling is turned on in the Energy Saver control panel. This will degrade movie playback performance. (5) Yet another possibility is that a background process (such as network activity) is causing playback glitches?

I am currently trying to make the file smaller without loosing quality. My client refuses to make the clip shorter. So Iam kind of stuck. When will this new version of Iscreensaver come out? I may need it. The clip would not play in quicktime either.IP: Logged |

Aha! If the clip won't play back smoothly in QuickTime Player then the problem is in the clip itself. What you need to do is edit the clip so that it plays fine in QuickTime Player. Only then should you move it to iScreensaver. IP: Logged |

There is not a problem with the QT movie. I play it on my windows box and it plays fine. Do you think that the titanium notebook is just not fast enough to play this clip full screen? It has 38mb of ram. Any other ideas?IP: Logged |

I doubt that the G4 isn't fast enough to play the movie. I'm wondering, do you have the capability of using a different movie codec? I.e. try Sorenson, MPEG2, or some other compression scheme? Or, if the movie is animation-style, you may want to try the Animation codec.Does the glitch/skip occur at the same point every time? If so, then this suggests a codec problem. If not, then it suggest that background activity and/or sleep and/or energy saver may be the problem... IP: Logged |
