I produce screensavers for Windows system and am very interested in having a Macintosh compliment. Is there any image protection provided with your screensaver program? Or would all images be available to the users? This is a serious problem for professional photographers. Thanks, Kerry DresslerIP: Logged |

Over the years, many people have asked about this problem. In a nutshell, people who have copyrighted artwork are concerned that this artwork can be easily "stolen" if stored in standard file formats. The truth is, that no matter what sort of "protection" a software package claims to provide, it is always possible to break the protection and get copies of the images. The truth also is that most artists greatly overestimate the potential damage this causes, for the following reasons: (1) Onscreen artwork is at a much lower resolution than print artwork. Even a small 3x5 thumbnail print contains much more image data than an onscreen image. Thus, anyone with a scanner can easily "steal" your images. Yet few artists are afraid of publishing their work in printed form. (2) Any artwork shown on the web is even more vulnerable than artwork in a screensaver. Thus, although other software packages may claim to offer "protection," in fact these claims are bogus and anyone who wants to grab copies of the images can easily do so. In addition, the quality of the artwork is usually much lower than what is normally available in print, and with the current popularity of scanner hardware, the problem of people scanning printed artwork is much greater than grabbing onscreen artwork. If you still are worried, and can not convince yourself that you can do without "protection" then you can still use our software. What you need to do is instead of using standard images, you must build a Flash file that contains your presentation. This Flash file offers as much protection as any other software package (which is to say that computer neophytes won't be able to crack it) and thus can give the copyright holder an added (although partially misinformed) sense of security.
