What I want is for the movie to be played actual size and centered, with black around it. Is that possible? Or perhaps an option to play it at 50% screen size would work. My screen is just too large for the movie to look good in full screen mode. I'd have to be across the room to enjoy it at that size, not sitting at my desk.

If you have included a way to change the playback size, please let me know how to access it. I'm sure it would help if I had an instruction manual. :)

If this feature is not yet possible, then please consider adding it. I had your older version of the full program, and always played the screensavers at actual size, rather than full screen. For example:

-after a period of inactivity, screensaver is launched and starts playing from the beginning of the video
-after 2min, user is active again and screensaver goes away
-after another period of inactivity, screensaver is launched again. Can it resume playback at the 2min mark or will it start over again at the beginning of the video each time?

I'd appreciate any input on whether this is possible. And does this option exist on the iScreensaver side or on the local computer that is operating the screensaver? If the animation begins immediately (or the Control menu does not allow you to choose Play/Pause) then you have a problem.

* Make sure the SWF file does not start playing before the window resizes. If you notice any issues with the animation content not matching the screen exactly, you may have this issue.

The solution in either case:

* Insert some blank frames (perhaps 0.25 to 0.5 seconds worth) BEFORE the first animation frame in your SWF.
* In these blank frames, put a single rectangle that matches the size of the stage and is filled with the background color of your choice. (This is important so that iScreensaver can detect the "natural size" of your SWF animation, used for computing aspect ratios in the various stretch modes)

* Verify that you have succeeded by loading the new SWF inside iScreensaver Designer, and opening the preview window. If it works, you should see
- the animation pauses when in pause mode, and plays when in play mode
- the SWF width and height were properly detected at the correct size (to see the Width/Height values, switch to List view, or right click the item and choose Item/Media, then open the Compression tab and verify the width, height values match your file.

Additional Notes:

* do NOT attempt to enter full screen mode using [fscommand ("fullscreen", "true")] -- this will cause a security violation on many systems and may also cause the screensaver to malfunction.

* do NOT attempt to adjust the window size. Your SWF should be passive, allowing iScreensaver to set the window size.

"How do you keep multi-monitor systems precisely in sync?"

When we've created Art Gallery Image Presentations for clients, where the gallery desires to use their own Mac system sporting dual monitors (or more), we have to design our presentation around some common technical details. Please note this is for Mac OS X only, Windows only supports single monitors using Designer 4.

When using iScreensaver, multiple monitors are not designed to stay in sync. The 'easy' technical reason for this is that given the variety of video cards, video drivers, and media (images, flash, and various movie files) and the fact that the two monitors may be both different size and shape (which affects playback speed), there's really no way to keep them in sync. Any sync seen is just luck. Even sequential monitors right off the assembly line can exhibit differences from one another.

Our recommendation is to design with this in mind, and not attempt to have fully synchronized presentations on multi-monitor setups. If you truly need perfect sync, then you'll need to turn on Monitor Mirroring in the OS so that both monitors are showing the same thing. We also recommend a high-quality Solid State Drive.

How do we design around it?

We use shuffle, and purposely push the monitor displays further out of sync with having different durations for the images. Half are set to 6 seconds, the other half set to 8 seconds. Or during the opening, we use the HUD and tap the keyboard's arrow keys to push to the next item early.

"Why can't they stay in sync again?"

Short answer - computers aren't magic, they only seem that way.

If this is a screensaver meant to be used as an addon to a computer used for professional / business purposes, then the end-user needs to understand that a screensaver runs at the whim of the Operating System (OS) and has to share resources (RAM, CPU, Disk) with other processes that are running in the background. As an example, if the user is on Mac OS X, and has a Time Machine backup proceeding, the screensaver will necessarily slow down as the OS divides time between the foreground and background operations.

This is not a flaw but rather a feature.
Imagine a screensaver that caused the user's entire computer to come to a grinding halt!
Expectations need to be set reasonably based on these limitations.

For Windows users who need to do a screensaver installation across multiple machines in a managed (Active Directory or Group Policy) network:

Instructions for doing a Silent Install / Active Directory scenario:

1. If you haven't done so already, upgrade to iScreensaver Designer 4 and re-build your screensaver.

2. On a test machine that you have an Administrator account, log in, and copy the installation folder to this machine.

2A. Install the saver using the EXE installer file using the "Install for All Users" option.

2B. This will put Two items (a .SCR file and a LIBS folder) into your C:\WINDOWS folder.
for example: C:\Windows\MyScreensaver.scr and C:\Windows\MyScreensaver Libs\
It will also set some registry keys.

2C. If you want to set per-computer screensaver options (such as audio volume, or the use of the HUD), then open the screensaver control panel, click "Options" and set your desired options. Close the control panel.

2D. Verify that the screensaver functions normally.

To roll out the screensaver system-wide:

3. Create an Active Directory install process which does the following things:

3A. Places the two items (the .SCR file and the LIBS folder noted above) in C:\WINDOWS (or the equivalent WIN32 folder as per your configuration). Important: do not rename either the SCR or the Libs folder, as they reference each other by name. If you need them named differently, change the name in your .ISC project file in iScreensaver Designer, and re-build the screensaver, then start over at step 1.

3B. Selects the SCR as the currently selected screensaver by setting the registry key:
HKCU/Desktop/SCRNSAVE.EXE=C:\WINDOWS\MYSAVER.SCR
Adjust the path to match your installation. note that this path MUST be the short (8.3) format path, even on Vista/Win7.

You may also want to Shadow the system.ini value as well.
See
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms815030.aspx
and
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/gp/130.asp

3C. If you want to set screensaver-specific registry values (see 2C above) then also copy the appropriate registry keys you chose into:
HKCU/Software/iScreensaver//

Additional necessary permissions:

4. The screensaver needs access to the IE8 rendering engine. JavaScript must be enabled.

5. The screensaver needs read / write access to the %tmp% folder during operation.

6. If Flash or QuickTime content is included, access to these plugins must be allowed.

7. Anti-virus software must not block the operation.

*** Update: these issues are no longer relevant as of iScreensaver 4.4 -- Please update if you haven't already ***

Today Apple released Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" as well as Safari updates : Safari 5.0.6 for Mac OS X 10.5, and Safari 5.1 for Mac OS X 10.6.

These updates cause some issues with screensavers built with iScreensaver Designer 4.

10.7 Issues:
* Issue: Screensaver may be hard to exit when using the Heads Up Display ("HUD") in addition to the security setting "Require Password after sleep or screen saver begins. Solution: disable the screensaver's HUD option and/or disable "Require Password". If you encounter difficulty quitting the screensaver, try hitting the ESC key or Apple-Q.

Safari 5.06 and 5.1 Issues under Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6:
* Flash (SWF) items may not render at all.
* Movie items may show up in a strange location onscreen.
Solution: we have identified the cause of both these issues and will have a fix available next week. In the mean time, if you can't revert back to an older version of Safari, we suggest you use a different screensaver for a few days.

Version 4.3.8, to be released next week, will fix these issues, and we are happy to report that it works well under Mac OS X 10.7.

If you encounter any issues that are not on this list, please post your question to the forums.

*** Update ***
Version 4.3.6 has been approved on the Mac App Store and should fix this issue. Please upgrade.

--- Older info ----

If you are trying to use version 4.3.5 of iScreensaver Personal, and getting a message "iScreensaver Personal 4. app" is damaged.

We have identified two possible ways this can happen:

1. You are running from a case-sensitve filesystem. In that case, you can either wait for the 4.3.6 update (coming soon), or as a temporary work-around, run the app from a non-case-sensitive filesystem (such as a DMG created with Disk Utilities).

2. Your system is not reporting that it has a main Ethernet MAC address. You can either wait for the 4.3.6 update, or : Open System Preferences, choose "Network" and make sure you have an active Ethernet interface. If you don't have one, use the [+] button to add one. You may need to plug in an active ethernet cable to make it active. Then launch the app again, and it should validate properly.

Both of these items will be fixed in 4.3.6 which we are submitting to Apple for review.
